How To Experience The Perfect Mediterranean Sunrise In Spain
Sitting on my balcony in Spain overlooking the Mediterranean ocean has been such a transformative experience. So much so, that I think a Mediterranean Sunrise should totally be on your bucket list.
The experience is so simple and profound. It’s great for thinking through things, meditation, or just to watch the show while you sip your morning coffee. Watching an incredible sunrise connect us to nature in very profound ways and reminds us how small we are, and how wonderful that really is.
Every painter who has ever tried to paint a sunrise has inevitably found frustration in the process. A beautiful sunrise is impossible to capture completely. The vivid colors, the way the sunlight bounces off any clouds passing by, the glistening of the sun on the sea below. All these things are easy to paint, but impossible to capture. The only way to truly experience a grand Mediterranean sunrise is to experience one yourself.
Living on the coast here, I get up almost every morning to watch this spectacular show, and no two sunrises are ever the same. So I highly recommend watching more than one when you come here on vacation.
Best Places To Watch The Sunrise In Spain
I will start off by saying that if you can get a hotel with a balcony facing the sea, you have won the Mediterranean sunrise lottery. It’s a fantastic way to view it without having to be up and dressed, and ready to go at such an early hour. Nothing beats watching the sunrise in your jammies with a warm cup of coffee in hand. That said, not everyone will have that, so these locations are wonderful places to head to first thing in the morning. Just don’t forget a Thermos of hot coffee!
Alicante – Playa del Postiguet
This central beach in Alicante has stunning views of the sunrise over the Mediterranean, with the iconic Castillo de Santa Bárbara in the backdrop. And once you are done watching the sunrise, you can hike (or take the elevator) up to the castle for amazing views of Alicante!
Playa Muchavista (Alicante)
Just north of Alicante, (just a few easy tram stops on the L3 tram) this expansive sandy beach is perfect for sunrise watching with fewer crowds and a peaceful atmosphere. This beach is truly the most breathtaking piece of coastline I’ve seen in Spain so far. Though admittedly, you’d have a hard time finding an ugly beach in Spain.
Altea – La Roda Beach
A beautiful coastal town with pebble beaches, Altea is perfect for a peaceful sunrise, along with views of its whitewashed houses. Just remember to bring a folding chair because those pebbles are not terribly comfy to sit on.
Jávea (Xàbia) – Cabo de la Nao
This incredible cape gives you panoramic views of the sea and sunrise, and is perfect for nature lovers and photographers.
Benidorm – Playa de Levante
Known for its vibrant nightlife and population of English vacationers and transplants, Benidorm transforms itself from a nightclub haven into a pristine morning experience with breathtaking sunrise views over the skyscraper-lined coast. Though, admittedly, if you went for the parties, you may have a hard time getting up in time for the sunrise.
Calpe – Peñón de Ifach
Hike up to the top, or view the sunrise from the bottom of this towering limestone rock for a unique and beautiful perspective of a Mediterranean sunrise.
Torrevieja – La Mata Beach
A long stretch of sandy beach, perfect for soaking in the golden hues of sunrise with the gentle sound of waves. While the area can be quite crowded during the day (particularly during tourist season), the beaches are pretty serene and calm in the early morning hours.
Valencia – Albufera Natural Park
Watch the sunrise over tranquil lagoons surrounded by rice paddies. This area gives you a mix of coastal and inland beauty, and if you can stick around until lunchtime, you won’t want to miss the authentic Paella at the local restaurants in the area. My favorites are shrimp paella and chicken paella.
Cabo de Palos – Lighthouse Lookout
Near Cartagena, this rugged spot provides incredible views of the sea and the first light of day. Simply find a spot to park your car or yourself on the craggy mound surrounding the lighthouse and unpack your breakfast picnic while you wait for an incredible show.
Cartagena – Cala Cortina
This is a small, secluded beach close to the city, that gives you calm waters and a peaceful atmosphere for a quiet sunrise. The water is serene and the sunrise views are amazing.
Cabo de Gata – Playa de los Genoveses
Located in a natural park in Almería, this unspoiled beach gives you a raw and natural setting for a perfect Mediterranean sunrise. Nature lovers will appreciate this spot.
Málaga – Playa de la Malagueta
If you prefer the beaches of southern Spain and a popular beach with palm trees lining the shore, this is an easily accessible spot to watch the sun peek over the horizon. Afterward, you can head into town for a delicious cafe con leche and a flaky croissant.
Nerja – Balcón de Europa
This famous viewpoint provides stunning panoramic views of the sea and is a magical spot to catch the sunrise in Costa del Sol. The literal balcony is a great spot no matter what time of day it is, but sunrise here is special.
Marbella – Cabopino Beach
If sandy beaches with palm trees are your vibe, this spot is known for its natural dunes. It’s a great beach to enjoy the morning’s first light.
Estepona – Playa del Cristo
This cove-shaped beach has calm waters and a delicious view of the sunrise. It’s a great beach to head to with kids and is perfect for letting them run around while you wait for the sunrise show to begin.
Tarifa – Playa de Los Lances
If you love an expansive and sandy beach, the southernmost point of mainland Europe is a great place to head to for seeing the sunrise. Tarifa gives you unique sunrise views over the Atlantic-Mediterranean divide.

Tips For Experiencing The Best Mediterranean Sunrise In Spain
Here are my tips for having your best Mediterranean sunrise experience.
Check Sunrise Times
Use apps like Time and Date or Google to find the exact sunrise time for your location. Plan to arrive 30–45 minutes early to soak in the dawn colors. Honestly, do not miss the pre-sunrise display. It’s breathtaking.
Choose The Right Spot
Look for places with clear, unobstructed views of the horizon, such as beaches, cliffside lookouts, or seaside promenades.
Scout the Location the Day Before
Visit your chosen spot during the day to make sure it’s accessible and safe in the early morning. Remember, it will be harder to see where you are going. You don’t want to be hiking rocky cliffs in the dark.
Dress for the Weather
Morning temperatures can be cool, even in summer. Bring a light jacket, comfortable shoes, and possibly a blanket if you plan to sit for a while. In many places, folding chairs are the best way to go.
Bring Essentials
- Camera or smartphone for photos and videos.
- A thermos of coffee, tea, or water.
- Snacks for a simple breakfast picnic.
- A beach towel or portable chair for comfort.
Avoid Crowded Areas
Popular tourist spots may draw crowds, especially in summer. So look for quieter locations for a better overall experience, but also know that early risers often have the beach to themselves. So this may not be the biggest concern, but it’s worth mentioning for some areas.
Capture the Moment Thoughtfully
- Use the “golden hour” light for photography.
- Experiment with angles to capture the reflections on the water and surrounding scenery.
- Don’t forget to put the camera down and just enjoy the moment!
Incorporate Morning Activities
Combine your sunrise viewing with a walk along the shore, a yoga session, or journaling. Something that will help you relax into the experience.
Respect Nature
These areas you visit will only stay beautiful if you do your part. Take any trash with you and leave the area as pristine as you found it.
Plan for Breakfast Nearby
Find a charming seaside café or restaurant that opens early. Some locations offer delicious Spanish breakfast options like a tostada con tomate or freshly baked pastries. My personal favorite is a croissant with tomato and avocado and a side of fried eggs. Yum!
Check the Weather Forecast
Clear skies are ideal, so ensure no clouds or storms are expected for the morning you plan to go. Fog can also dampen the experience, so being mindful of the weather will go a long way to making sure you have a great experience.
Invite a Friend or Go Solo
Sunrises are magical whether you share them with someone special or enjoyed them as a moment alone. Either way, make sure you experience this the way you want to, even if you have to leave somebody sleeping back at your hotel.
Set An Early Alarm
Ensure you give yourself enough time to wake up, travel, and settle into your spot without rushing. This should never be a stressful event. You want this experience to truly ease you into your day.
Traveling With Dogs?
Many beaches in Spain do not allow dogs. So make sure you do a quick google search to find out before you go.
On A Personal Note
It is now my normal routine to wake up before the sun, make a cup of coffee, and head out to my balcony to watch the sunrise. That time gives me a daily moment of peace and tranquility that is unmatched. It reminds me that we. humans really do NEED nature, simply because we are a part of it.
These types of moments we can create for ourselves are vastly underrated and underappreciated. If you get the chance to see a Mediterranean sunrise, do not miss it. Do not oversleep. Do this for yourself. I promise, you will never regret it.
